ST. NUNO
Canonization of St. Nuno Alvares Pereira de Santa Maria
·
Curia OCD
Roma (15-05-2009).- The canonization of the carmelite brother, Nuno Alvares Pereira (1360-1431) took place in St. Peters, Rome on April 26. He was a national and mythical figure in Portugal for his feats in battle. He was made an earl of the Kingdom and the fourth verse of the national poem Os Lusiada by Luis de Camoes eulogizes him, as did the writers Calderon de la Barca and Tirso de Molina. He was a humble servant, a great devotee of the Blessed Virgin, and as such is a good model for brothers in the Carmelite Order. His liturgical celebration, as an optional memorial for us, a feast in Portugal, is to be celebrated on April 1.
The O.Carm Prior General, Fr. Fernando Millan Romeral wrote an opportune and very evocative letter to the carmelite family with the title, Rivestito della corazza della Giustizia (Put on the breastplate of justice) (Rome 2009). The latest biography was written by Fr. Raphael Maria Lopez Melus, O.Carm., Nuno de Santa María, carmelita. Un santo de ayer con mensaje para hoy. Onda 2009, pp 214.
