Roma (15-06-2009).- 38. The Order should read every year, from October 15, 2009 to 2014, either personally or as a community, one of St. Teresas works, with the help of a plan that is to be worked out by a commission appointed by the Definitory. Community study should be completed, where this is possible, by celebrations, short courses on spirituality, interdisciplinary conferences on her works, etc. This study should be the object of an annual meeting in every Region, to share and evaluate on progress.
39. The following will be the order for studying Teresas works: the Life (2009-2010), Way of Perfection (2010-2011), Foundations (2011-2012), Interior Castle (2012-2013), Spiritual Testimonies, Poetry, Letters (2013-2014).
40. The object that we are proposing, through listening to St. Teresas words, is to generate in individuals and in communities a strenghtening of our christian existence both biblically and evangelically, and an enrichment of our life of faith in communion with the Church. As people who read Teresa today, we should notice that the fruits coming from contact with her writings help improve our lives as teresian carmelites, as effectively as St. Gregory attributed in an analgous way to Scripture: it grew with the person who read it, in proportion to the faith and love of the reader. For this reason, our study will be motivated, not so much from a concern to be systematic, but to discover in Teresas writings what is relevant for our lives today.
41. The Definitory will create a central commission, whose principle task will be to work out an annual guide or aid, as well as to promote, coordinate and diffuse the initiatives that should arise from the different Regions.
42. We should widen the circle of interest in St. Teresa, with the scope of enriching her studies. We should look beyond individuals and communities to our Discalced Carmeltie nuns, the secular Order, the Teresian family and laypeople. We should forment together this study of the works of St. Teresa, in our communities and in our pastoral activity.
43. We should create a web-page, with the goal of spreading interest in the writings of St. Teresa, and encourging the most universal study possible of her works, with the help of new technology.
44. We are to expand the potential of Avila [Spain] as a centre for welcoming pilgrims, especially young people. This is to be an initiative of the General Definitory, together with the coordinated efforts of La Santa priory (the birthplace of St. Teresa), the Iberian Conference of Provincials and our new college in Avila (Cites). Pastoral activities will be organized in Avila, which can be expanded to include important teresian places. Such pastoral initiatives will include pilgrimages, days for formation and prayer, etc. In this way we shall take up the challenge presented by World Youth Day in 2011, seeing this Day as an opportunity to diffuse the figure and works of St. Teresa.
45. We should complete this pastoral initiative, by counting on the contribution from other centres of formation in the Order, like the Teresianum, with initiatives on a general cultural level, through the organization of courses and conferences, meetings and seminars for specialists, translators and those studying the Saint. Such initiatives should devise practical suggestions that can be implemented in the different Regions and in centers for the study of spiritual theology, etc.
46. We should celebrate an extraordinary Definitory at least once in the next sexennium which will look at, among other themes, how this kind of study is progressing.
47. We should establish a textus receptus of St. Teresas writings, like a modus operandi for the incorporation of new contributions, especially concerning her writings and other fragments that could be discovered, with the scope of unifying ways of quoting from the original text and in translations. The Definitory should begin this undertaking as soon as possible, after having spoken with experts and publishing houses.
48. We should encourage, through the Definitory, an edition of St. Teresas writings in different languages, in an inexpensive and popular format.
