The Discalced Carmelite Francois-Marie Lethel will preach the Spiritual Exercises to the Holy Father and the Roman Curia

Rome-Italy (07-02-2011).- Fr. Francois-Marie Lethel, a Discalced Carmelite and Professor of Dogmatic theology and Spirituality at the Faculty of the ‘Teresianum’, Rome, will preach the Spiritual Exercises in the Vatican for the Holy Father and the Roman Curia from 13-19 March.

Fr. Lethel, prelate secretary of the Pontifical Academy of Theology, will direct the meditations around the theme of ‘the light of Christ in the heart of the Church – John Paul II and the theology of the Saints’; according to a communication from the Vatican Press Office. ‘We must prepare ourselves, spiritually, for this beatification that will be an enormous grace for the Church,’ said Fr. Lethel.

‘I am fully convinced that I shall fulfill this task not on my own, but as a member of the Mystical Body, as a priest of Christ, as a member of the Carmelite Order and, specifically, as a member of my community at the Teresianum, Rome, and as a member of the Pontifical Academy of Theology in the service of the Holy Father,’ explained Fr. Francois-Marie Lethel in a letter shortly before the news was made known, in which he asked for the support and prayers of his brothers and sisters in Carmel.

Fr. Lethel was born in 1948 in Paris, France. He is a Doctor in Theology and a Licentiate in Philosophy. He is the author of many books, among which a study of the saints: ‘Connaître l'Amour du Christ qui surpasse toute connaisance - La théologie des saints.’

The holiness and the figure of the John Paul II from a Christological dimension will be the theme of the next Spiritual Exercises in the Vatican, in view of the forthcoming beatification of Pope Wojtyla, on 1st May 2011. Fr. Lethel gave a conference on the future Blessed in 2005 in Bologna, Italy, when he spoke on the theme, ‘Here is Your Mother. The witness of the Servant of God, John Paul II, for the priests of the 3rd millennium.’
